Finding Purpose. (4) Spiritual Gifts.

We’ve covered a lot in this series. You’re doing great! We’ll start putting together all the pieces in the next post! Today, let’s talk about spiritual gifts – what are they and why do they matter?

What are spiritual gifts?

Spiritual gifts are “things God makes you especially good at, so you can help other Christians.” – Jonathan Smothers

They can further be explained as “the Spirit Himself working in and through ordinary, broken, struggling, weak, forgiven Christians… He’s putting Himself on display… showing His power, working in and through Christians, to draw them into deeper fellowship with Christ and to greater conformity to His image.” Sam Storms

Who has spiritual gifts?

Every single follower of Jesus.

“God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.” 1 Peter 4:10-11

What are some types of spiritual gifts?

Here are just a sample of spiritual gifts: hospitality, serving, preaching, teaching, giving, encouraging… There are a lot of them.

“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.” 1 Corinthians 12:4-7

It’s important to discover what God’s equipped you to do, and then start doing it. We’re a team and we need each other. Each of us has a unique and valuable role to fill.

How do I figure out what God’s equipped me to do to help other Christians?

There are several spiritual gift questionnaires and programs (e.g. SHAPE, Network, PLACE) available.

  • Start with your local church community. They may have a spiritual gifts assessment workbook available to purchase or borrow, and may also offer a class if you’d prefer.
  • Finding Your Spiritual Gifts by C. Peter Wagner is available through Hoopla – free through many libraries.
  • Lifeway Bookstores has this online questionnaire available as well.

The questionnaires help you not only figure out what your spiritual gift is, but also give you some direction on where you can use that gift. We’ll cover more about this in the next post, too. Don’t worry! Remember that this is a process that takes time.

Why does this matter? Need You

The Bible says that we are all One Body, we need each other, and we have different tasks to do. Just like your physical body. If you lost your foot, it would be harder for you to walk. Losing an ear makes it harder to hear. Your nose can’t do what your elbow does. Each part of the body is important. If one part is missing, it makes it harder to function as One Body.

We need you!!! We need what God has supplied through you… If we all share what God has given us with each other, we will be stronger, united in Jesus’ name to do great things. To bring more kindness, goodness, truth, grace, and hope into this world!

Coming up in the next post, we’ll cover how to put this all of this information together! Cannot wait! See you there!
